Once you've made it to Brunswick, indulge in a little local history with a visit to the statue of Joshua Chamberlain near the campus of Bowdoin College (in the background). Chamberlain, a graduate of Bowdoin and a professor there, led the Union's defense of Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War and accepted the Confederacy's surrender at Appomattox in Virginia in 1865.

Step back in time with a tour of the house where Chamberlain, Brunswick's most famous citizen, lived. The house at 226 Maine St. is now a museum operated by the Pejepscot Historical Society.

And if you'd like to see the Civil War hero's final resting place, head to Pine Grove Cemetery.

Whole lotta history: First Parish Church (background, with Chamberlain statue), a Gothic Revival building that dates to the 1840s, is one of 14 sites in Brunswick on the National Register of Historic Places.

Joshua Chamberlain isn't Brunswick's only well-known townsperson. This is the marker on a pew at First Parish Church where "Uncle Tom's Cabin" author Harriet Beecher Stowe sat in 1851 when she had a vision of a scene for the book.

It's not quite as ornate as Joshua Chamberlain's, but the house at 63 Federal St. where Harriet Beecher Stowe lived is a National Historic Landmark.

Spend some quality indoors, too: This undated image supplied by Bowdoin College Museum of Art shows Mainer, a painting by William Wegman and one of several pieces he created around postcards that are part of a new show of his work, "Hello Nature," at the museum through Oct. 21, 2012. The museum is one of a number of cultural and historic sites in Brunswick.

Another amusement park this year? How about something completely different? Consider taking a trip to Brunswick, Maine. Amtrak's Downeaster train will extend its route from Boston and Portland to Brunswick in November 2012. (But doesn't the station, shown here in July 2012, look nice?) It will be the first regularly scheduled passenger rail service for the town in more than 50 years. Talk about getting away from it all.
