Tourists watch a whale shark glide by their boat on the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico. The Sea of Cortez, a three-hour flight south of San Diego, is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks congregate predictably.

Seen here is a mangrove estuary not far from the Las Animas Wilderness Lodge south of Bahia de los Angeles in Baja California, Mexico. Whale sharks start showing up in summer, with peak season for whale shark-watching from the start of September through the end of October.

You don't have to travel to Mexico to swim with whale sharks. Former AJC reporter Jamie Gumbrecht puts on her oxygen tank before entering the aquarium's largest tank to enjoy an afternoon swim with the whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium.
