How will you celebrate spring? Here are a pair of special events that are family- and date-friendly and close-to-home.

On April 16-18, the city of Dahlonega will turn into a hub for live music, folk dancers, a juried artists' market, and much more during the 14th annual Bear on the Square Festival.

The three-day event will feature bluegrass, mountain and folk music, local, regional and national headliners, workshops, auctions, art, dancing, children's activities, food and shopping in the historic Public Square and the adjacent Hancock Park. Professional and amateur musicians flock to this festival as do people-watchers, music lovers and folkways enthusiasts.

Admission is free to most activities. Some performances are $15 to $50 for VIP seating for one day.

Dahlonega is approximately 75 miles northeast of Atlanta.

A visit to Gatlinburg wouldn't be complete without a taste of the local flavor.

On April 22, live entertainment, family fun and tasty ribs and chicken wings prepared to perfection bring Gatlinburg's downtown Parkway to life during the 9th Annual Ribfest & Wings Festival.

The event will feature extended hours (to 9 p.m., with food sampling starting at 6), two hot wing eating contests and the smooth sounds of several popular bands including the Beat Daddys.

In the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg delivers family fun, unique shops and an extensive arts and crafts community. Explore the popular Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies, ride the country's longest aerial tram, browse through hundreds of unique shops in search of the perfect treasure, and enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains.

The approximate distance from Atlanta to Gatlinburg, Tennessee is 143 miles.
