Modern Tudor shakes up traditional floor plan

Rachel and Michael Hoath's modern Tudor home in Morningside has the historic feel of a classic Tudor with the advantage of an open floor plan.

Rachel and Michael Hoath's modern Tudor home in Morningside was built in 2005. It has the historic feel of a classic Tudor but it has the advantage of a more up-to-date and open floor plan.

Homeowner and interior designer Rachel Hoath of Seiber Design counts Restaurant Eugene in Buckhead among her credits. This is the dining area of her family's home.

The dining room chandelier came with the home when the couple bought it, and it's one of Rachel Hoath's favorite accents. The painting on the wall by Chilean artist Perez Jara is on loan from friends who are starting a collection. "They went down there and really liked her work," Rachel Hoath said.

The sideboard in the dining area gets a dose of jazz from the lamp shades.

This is a sitting area in the great room of the couple's Morningside home. "My husband and I like casual comfortable, yet elegant. I really like all colors. I like neutrals and then you can add a splash of color. If you want to change your palette you can pretty easily," Rachel Hoath said.

Son Aiden's wooden rocking Harley Davidson replica is parked in the great room. "His dad is very into motorcycles. The garage is full," Rachel Hoath said, adding that her husband prefers street bikes and vintage dirt bikes.

When the Hoaths moved in, the kitchen was painted gray. Rachel Hoath used a warmer buff color that makes the subway tile pop.

All the appliances are commercial grade because Rachel Hoath enjoys cooking. "I like experimenting with Thai and Indian food," she said.

This cozy workstation beside the kitchen has a view of the pool and courtyard. Hoath plans to move her office to the guest suite.

The sitting room off the foyer is separate from the main living room. The architect, working with the previous owner, kept the fireplace in its original location.

The sofas in the great room are from Mitchell Gold.

Bedding in the master suite is by BedDown.

The master suite boasts a view of the pool.

The master bathroom, with its contrasting espresso-colored floors and gleaming white sink and subway tile, is Rachel Hoath's most cherished room. "It's big and I love taking baths in there," she said.

White gladiolus add another clean detail to the master bath.

A separate guest suite also faces the pool.

The saltwater pool with a pebble bottom is one of Rachel Hoath's favorite features. Her son, Aiden, loves to swim, too.

Rachel Hoath plans to add a fence and iron gate in the front to give her children more room to roam.

Architect Scott West created this cozy 3,000-square-foot home with four bedrooms, 3.5 baths and a guest suite above the garage.
