Mid-Century modern: A house to see through

The tan leather chair in the great room is a Soriano chair with ottoman by Afra and Tobias Scarpa.

The great room showcases clean lines, white walls and plenty of pop. The house is used for commercial video and photo shoots.

A counter with storage separates the dining room from the great room. The counter was built in a floating style to keep the two rooms connected.

Johnston collects Russel Wright's pottery and spun aluminum vessels. She started collecting as a teenager.

Johnston, shown in the dining room with the Warren Platner-designed table and chairs, started her love of Mid-Century modern early in life when her mother took her to the Cranbrook Institute, an arts and sciences academy near Detroit.

The foyer includes a Frederick Weinberg sculpture of dancing figures.

This purple painting in the dining room is by Ton Schulten, a Dutch painter who paints landscapes using bright blocks of color.

Johnston overhauled the kitchen, adding a skylight and replacing the windows to allow more light. She also had new cabinets and counters installed.

The breakfast area features a chandelier from the Brutalist period, which is a sub-style of the Modernist movement.

Egg chairs based on the design by Arne Jacobsen anchor the reading room, which also offers a panoramic view of the backyard.

The master bedroom was the biggest change to the original structure. It was built on stilts to highlight views of Johnston's lush backyard and pool.

Johnston has the option of taking her morning coffee in her bedroom.

A frosted glass wall partitions the toilet closet within the master bath.

The master bath was relocated to make room for the master bedroom. It offers heated slate floors and a peaceful view of bamboo.

Another Warren Platner chair appears in the master bedroom.

This hallway leads to the lower level, which houses the home office and guest suite. The rug is a Kyle Bunting piece made of cowhide.

Even Johnston's home office reflects her refined taste in all things modern.

Sears built this pergola when the company rented Johnston's home for a photo shoot. The Sears employees left, but the pergola remained.

Johnston's dog, Venus, savors the sun as she lounges beside the martini shaker-shaped pool in the backyard.

At this house, it's all about the views. These floor-to-ceiling windows keep the backyard constantly in view.
