Broadway hit “Jersey Boys” will headline the entertainment offerings on Norwegian Bliss when it debuts in 2018.
Norwegian Cruise Line made the announcement recently in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., detailing two shows it has planned for the main stage as well as music and comedy club plans for the ship. A second untitled show in the works will be a Cuban-inspired, Broadway-style musical from Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Warren Carlyle, who most recent choreographed the Broadway musical “Hello, Dolly” starring Bette Midler. Carlyle also directed and choreographed “After Midnight,” for which he won the 2014 Tony for “Best Choreography” and is currently on stage on Bliss’ sister ship Norwegian Escape.
The ship will get a new comedy club and nightclub venue called Alibi as well as its own version of a venue that recently debuted on Norwegian Epic — The Cavern Club, which is inspired by the Liverpool club where The Beatles played in the 1960s.
One other theatrical production coming is “Happy Hour Prohibition — The Musical,” a one-hour performance set in 1919 on the eve of Prohibition that will be put on as a happy hour pre-dinner show and late night adults-only show in the Alibi Comedy and Nightclub.
The big draw, though, will be the Tony Award-winning musical “Jersey Boys” that won for “Best Musical” in 2006. It will play on the main stage of the Bliss Theater.
“Jersey Boys” features the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons telling the story of four blue-collar kids from Newark who find fame. The show features hits “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Oh What a Night,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and “Working My Way Back to You.” The show will make its at-sea debut when Bliss begins sailings in North American next summer.
While there’s no title yet for Bliss’ second main-stage show, the line said it will feature dance, pageantry and costumes by Cuban-American fashion icon Isabel Toledo, who earned a Tony nomination for “After Midnight.” More details on this original production will come this fall.
Norwegian Bliss is slated to first serve Alaska next summer and then reposition to Miami for winter Caribbean sailings beginning November 2018.
Between Alaska and Miami, Bliss will sail one five-night Pacific coastal cruise from Vancouver to Los Angeles on Sept. 30, some seven- and eight-night Mexican Riviera cruises from Los Angeles and a 14-night Los Angeles-to-Miami cruise on Nov. 3 through the newly expanded Panama Canal that has stops in Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; and Cartagena, Colombia.
Booking for Bliss cruises is open to the public starting Jan. 12. Call 888-625-2784 or visit www.ncl.com for details.
