Over the Fourth of July weekend, Jay Bookman and his daughter Elly drove across the country. Along the way, they stopped at historic sites.

At the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, the iron sculpture "Spirit Warriors," etched against a blue Montana sky, honors the Native American warriors who fought at Little Bighorn.

At Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana, the spot where George Armstrong Custer fell can be seen. In the foreground is the spot where his brother, Tom, was found. Neither man was buried at the scene. The remains of the officers were removed for individual burial elsewhere; those of enlisted personnel were buried in a large grave at the site.

Road hazards tend to be a little different in Montana.
