Grant Park mansion restored to former glory

Mansion built in 1898 by a Union captain is showcased on the Grant Park Candlelight Tour of Homes in 2007.

The formal parlor gives visitors a glimpse of how this 33-room Victorian mansion has been transformed over the years. The life-size Fontanini nativity scene is a special touch for the Grant Park Candlelight Tour of Homes.

Jamie Walters, Glenn Storie and Winston Killingsworth own the grand mansion on Grant Street. Storie and Killingsworth, local real estate agents, bought the home in 1998.

Walters has been researching the history of the home and puts the build date at 1868. The builder and owner, Capt. James A. Burns, was a Union officer who settled in Atlanta.

Burns and two fellow Union officers are buried on the grounds. The home has seven porches.

This bedroom on the third floor serves as a guest room for family who visit. The room is painted in sage tones and features a sitting area. The area was originally servants quarters.

The master bedroom is off the back of the home in an area that was mostly used for storage during Burns' ownership. Walters' bedroom is believed to be where Burns' slept.

The master bathroom has a three-head shower and an area to give their dogs a bath.

This is a detail photo of the sitting area in the turret on the third floor. The homeowners stenciled stars on the ceiling and added fringe. The bat chandelier came from Rejuvenation.

The stairwell is filled with family photos. The men had to replace several pieces of the railing, which were stolen during its time as a boarding house.

The olive-and-red toned den has plenty of room to put your feet up.

The upstairs balcony is the mens' favorite spot during nicer weather.

The butler's pantry, which is off the kitchen and under the servants' stairway, is new to the house. The homeowners used Venetian marble for the counters, and the room also features a wine cooler, ice maker and refrigerator.

This 55-foot-deep well used to sit on a well porch before the remodel took over the space. It is now part of the kitchen with a sturdy glass top.

The kitchen includes granite counters, cherry cabinets and professional-grade appliances. The floor is tiled in a Greek key design.

The informal dining room features wainscoting and deep red walls. The table is made from 300-year-old wood.

Glenn Storie's office is on the first floor. The half-moon window has exquisite trim detail.

The master bedroom closet also serves as a mini workout room.

This rug in the sewing room was left unfinished by one of the men's grandmothers when she was recruited to work in an airplane factory during World War II. Both Walters and Storie enjoy sewing.

A stained-glass window in one of the bedrooms was added during a previous renovation.

The homeowners repainted the home in traditional colors, updating the "Sweet N Low pink and blue" paint job. The tour of homes is Dec. 8 and 9.
