If you’re thinking about a weekend trip to the coast, head to Kure Beach in North Carolina for the Cape Fear Kite Festival.
Returning for its 15th year, the festival features kites in all shapes and sizes, from sea animals to birds to scuba divers. This year’s event will kick off Friday evening, November 4, when illuminated flyers will light up the sky during a A Night With Kites.
Saturday and Sunday activities will begin at 10 a.m. each day, with food trucks and vendors on hand with food and drinks at the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area.
In addition to watching the main attractions, there will be a face painting tent and kite decorating station for the kids.
At nearby Ocean Front Park, you can enjoy the seaside swings and playground, or drop a line from the Kure Beach Fishing Pier, one of the oldest piers on the Atlantic Coast.
While you’re in the area, check out seasonal activities like an ecotour to an uninhabited island, or a walking tour of the Civil War’s largest land and sea battle. At neighboring Carolina Beach, you can stroll a vintage boardwalk, explore colorful murals by local artists, enjoy fall brews at local restaurants and breweries, and more.
