It’s like deja vu all over again with airfare rates to Europe crossing the $1,200 round-trip mark to most spots on the continent. Prices this high haven’t been seen since the mid- to late 80s - a time when only those with deep pockets could cross the Atlantic. Today the rates are sky-high due mostly to excessive fuel surcharges and fees that are often twice the cost of the actual ticket price the airline charges for your seat.

For instance, the ‘base’ rate on an economy seat to Paris is $650 round-trip during the winter season which runs from Nov. 1-March 20. However, the actual total ticket rate is $1,300 once all the ‘extras’ are factored in.

So if you’re eyeing a trip to Paris, look to Air France for a special perk.

The carrier is offering a unique deal to the City of Light on trips taken through May 16, 2013.

A round-trip rate of $1,701 gets you a seat in Air France’s Premium Voyageur Class - an affordable alternative to Economy class.

This section of the aircraft features 40 percent additional space with generous legroom, a leg rest and a larger tray table. What’s better are the completely new seats equipped with a fixed shell to guarantee space and privacy. Seat amenities include a wide individual on-demand video screen and a Business Class amenities kit with better headphones, a feather pillow and a wool blanket. Passengers in Premium Voyageur Class also enjoy upgraded meal service prepared by Michel Nugues, a member of the “Toques du Ciel” airline cuisine group. The wines and champagnes, served at no extra charge, were selected by Olivier Poussier, one of the world’s top sommeliers.

The $1,701 round-trip rate has no blackout dates and space is still available on select peak year-end holidays (wish a ‘Bonne Annee!’ on New Year’s Eve when the Eiffel Tower puts on a spectacular laser and light display).

Trips require a two-week or more advance notice of travel. Include a Saturday night stay and return within 90 days of departure (you wish).

This airfare promotion has been ongoing and does not have a ticket-by date. However, the sale is not expected to expire anytime soon.
