Culture and history on display in Providence

Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the union, but there’s plenty to experience within its narrow borders.

WaterFire is a popular summertime musical event during which around 100 bonfires are lit on Providence's riverfront.

This is just one of the many grand, historic homes along Providence's Mile of History, located on Benefit Street.

Waterplace Park and Riverwalk, with its iron bridges and walkways, and a gondola that takes tourists for rides, makes the area somewhat reminiscent of Venice.

Examples of historic architecture can be found throughout Providence. The First Unitarian Church, dedicated in 1816, was the creation of local architect John Holden Greene.

Rhode Island may be small in size, but it's big in cultural and historical attractions. Rhode Island's Statehouse, an impressive marble monument which the Independent Man, an 11-foot gold-covered, bronze statue sits atop of, was completed in 1904. Tours are available. It provides a dramatic backdrop for Independence Day fireworks displays.
