The Chattanooga Choo-Choo and other area attractions make for fun family getaway

The Seven State Flag Court at Rock City has flags from the seven states you can see from the top of Lookout Mountain: Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Virginia and Alabama.

The penguins can amuse visitors for hours.

The Chattanooga Choo-Choo, a Holiday Inn hotel converted from the Terminal Station train depot, is a popular family-friendly destination. The 48 train rooms still have overhead racks, but the seats have been removed and the spacious rooms are furnished with queen-sized beds. Some rooms have trundle beds that accommodate up to four people.

Rock City Gardens is just one of the attractions during Founder's Day at Rock City, May 17. The 75th anniversary celebration honors the historic amusement village's beginnings. Lookout Mountain, 706-820-2531, www.seerockcity.com.

Rock City's Swing-Along Bridge is not the place to be if you're afraid of heights.

A Macaroni Penguin, with it's cheesy colored fur, struts along the riverfront at the Chattanooga Aquarium.

The Tennessee Aquarium is a must see. One of its best features is the way it maximizes its fabulous location on the riverfront. Exhibits are divided into two buildings, the River and the Ocean. Visitors can walk back and forth between buildings all day.

The Gardens at the Chattanooga Choo Choo is a busy spot. A trolley car travels the tracks behind the station for $1 per ride, and shops line the gardens in the former rail concourse. You can buy ice cream, coffee and other treats and just enjoy the grounds.
