Atlanta, Memphis mark 40 years of MLK history

Events in Atlanta and Memphis mark the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was shot on a balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.

The Margaret Mitchell House and Museum on Atlanta's Peachtree Street will host an exhibit of Bob Adelman's photographs, from the book "KING: The Photobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr." Atlanta and Memphis are hosting events to mark the 40th anniversary of King's assassination.

A visitor takes in artwork by Alfredo Jaar in the Anne Cox Chambers Wing at the High Museum of Art. The museum is now previewing some images from an exhibit that opens June 7, called "Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956-1968."

Residents gather to see "I Have a Dream: The Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr Collection" at the Atlanta History Center in 2006. The center on West Paces Ferry Road in Atlanta will host another exhibit, "Courage: The Vision To End Segregation, The Guts to Fight for It," about Brown v. Board of Education, through June 22.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth home is shown at 501 Auburn Avenue N.E. in Atlanta. Dr. King was born here on Jan. 15, 1929.

Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta is currently under renovations and won't be open for MLK anniversary events.
