Lonely Planet picks the top 10 U.S. travel destinations for 2013.

Which tourist hotspots made Lonely Planet's (www.lonelyplanet.com) list of the top 10 U.S. travel destinations for 2013? Montana's Glacier National Park, known for its 25 glaciers, took the No. 10 spot. Read on to find out the other nine.

Arizona's Verde Valley, known for its scenic red canyons and wine, ranked ninth among Lonely Planet's picks.

Minnesota's "Twin Cities" – Minneapolis and St. Paul – are a tourist favorite, boasting bike trails, a growing music scene and fun events. Here, thousands of people line the Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis during the 2006 Holidazzle Parade.

Northern Maine – known for its hiking trails, whitewater rafting and lobster – took the No. 7 spot on Lonely Planet's list.

Ranking sixth among the travel picks for 2013 is what Lonely Planet calls "the secret California dream" – the Eastern Sierra flank of the Sierra Nevada range.

Philadelphia – known for its art galleries, historic monuments and cheesesteaks – took the No. 4 spot on the list. Here, Philadelphia City Hall is shown.

Tourists can enjoy fresh seafood, beaches and breathtaking views in the San Juan Islands, which ranked third on Lonely Planet's list.

Fairbanks, with its stunning views of the Northern Lights 240 nights a year, ranked second among Lonely Planet's travel picks.

It's time to break out your finest festive hat and a bottle of bourbon: Louisville, home of the Kentucky Derby, took the No. 1 spot on Lonely Planet's list.
