The Hawks will be major players when NBA free agency opens for business this summer. A roster loaded with unrestricted free agents will go through another transformation. With the accompanying salary-cap flexibility the Hawks can pursue one or more of the big names who will be available July 1.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution spoke with several players a day after last week’s playoff-series loss abruptly ended their season. Here is their take on what the summer has in store for the organization.
Devin Harris: There are a lot of unknowns right now. I enjoyed it. I could see myself coming back, but you never know what happens in free agency. … Obviously, they made a lot of changes within the organization in the last year. I have a great relationship with (general manager) Danny (Ferry). (Coach) Larry (Drew) and I work well together and hopefully he's back. This is a team that has been in the playoffs year in and year out. They have a lot of room to move forward and are building something special.
Al Horford: It's intriguing just kind of seeing what is going to happen with everything that is going on here. I'm on board with Danny and the plans that he has for us here moving forward. He has a better plan than I certainly do. I'm just going to wait and see. My job is to really get better as a player, get healthy first of all, and keep working on my game and get better. I just know there are going to be things happening. We have a lot of free agents.
Dahntay Jones: I enjoyed my time here. Who knows what the future holds. I've been unrestricted before. It's just part of the business that goes on and hopefully I'll be back in a Hawks uniform.
Kyle Korver: I really enjoyed my year here in Atlanta. I enjoyed the team. I enjoyed the organization. I believe Danny Ferry is going to do some great things here. I really think he is. I think it's a great opportunity to bring in guys who are going to play fun basketball. I know the vision that he has, the kind of basketball that he likes to watch. I think he is going to bring in those types of guys. I like the same basketball that he likes. I'm very open to coming back here.
Zaza Pachulia: How can I not want to (be back)? I call Atlanta home. You guys know my relationship between me and the fans. I would love to be back, but this is my third time being a free agent. We all understand this is a business. We'll see when July comes, and we'll see what offers I get. I hope Atlanta will be one of them.
Anthony Tolliver: I think from the top, with Danny running the show, they are in good hands. He is a great and guy, a great leader. I think he is going to bring a lot of confidence to this city and this team. It's a big summer for the Atlanta Hawks, and there are a lot of free agents on this team. It will be interesting to see what direction they want to go and see who comes back, who doesn't come back and who they bring in. At the end of the day, whatever they end up doing will be the best for the long term of Atlanta.
Lou Williams: I think it's a great organization. I really enjoyed the work atmosphere that they created here. Me coming from a situation where I was with the same organization for seven years and coming out of the bird's nest for the first time in going to a new team, I was extremely pleased with being here. The working environment is very easy, very friendly. Guys come to work every day. From the business side of it, they don't really complicate things. They just want guys to be professional, work hard. You have to respect that.
