The winter storm has left the state's sports teams scrambling, watching and, like everyone else, waiting.
Georgia Tech’s basketball game at Clemson was the most high-profile change in schedules Monday. The ACC game, originally set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson, was postponed until 7 p.m. Wednesday. It will be televised on Fox Sports South.
Georgia Tech (7-7, 0-1 ACC) canceled its practice Monday. The Jackets will practice Tuesday and then board a bus to Clemson, which received about 6 to 7 inches of snow overnight Sunday.
The Atlanta Hawks, meanwhile, will wait until Tuesday to decide whether their home game at Philips Arena against the Milwaukee Bucks will tip off as scheduled at 7 p.m.
The Bucks, who have split the first two meetings with the Hawks this season, both winning on the other's home court, took a noon flight from Milwaukee and arrived in Atlanta as scheduled. The Hawks said the overnight weather and travel conditions for fans on Tuesday evening will determine whether the game is played.
Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox said his team’s travel plans for Wednesday night’s game at Vanderbilt could be impacted. The Bulldogs customarily travel on the day before a game and their original plan was to take a flight from Athens to Nashville on Tuesday.
Fox said options being considered include sticking with the original plan; taking a bus to Atlanta on Tuesday and a flight from Jackson-Hartsfield International Airport; taking a bus to Nashville on Tuesday; or taking a flight on Wednesday, the day of the game.
“We have talked about all of [those options] here this morning,” Fox said, “but really we’re waiting to see what the weather does before we make a decision.”
UGA was closed Monday, but Fox expected his players at an afternoon practice.
“If they had to, they live close enough [that] they could walk down here to practice,” he said.
Metro high school basketball is also in flux. Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton counties canceled Tuesday games, while other school systems were still waiting to decide.
Cobb and Fulton and DeKalb all canceled classes, which automatically canceled all extracurricular events.
Ralph Swearngin, the GHSA's executive director, said it was up to each county to determine its weather policy for athletics during the regular season.
