Kennesaw State baseball coach Mike Sansing, announced his retirement Monday, after 30 years with the program.
Sansing started his coaching career at Shorter College in Rome, where he compiled a 102-55 record in three seasons. He finishes at Kennesaw with 1,158 wins — sixth most for active coaches. During his three decades as skipper, Kennesaw State saw 22 All-Americans, 12 conference players of the year and 69 MLB draft selections suit up for the Owls.
“I want to thank all the players that I have had the incredible honor of coaching,” Sansing said in a statement. “It’s great players that make great coaches and I’ll never forget all of the top-notch people that committed their time to Kennesaw State and made it feel like such a family for all these years.”
“I want to thank my family for their love, their support and their patience,” he added. “Their dedication to Kennesaw State over the course of the last 30 years runs just as deep as mine.”
Sansing joined Kennesaw State in 1991 and led the Owls to two national championships (NAIA - 1994; Division II - 1996). The owls joined Division I ASUN Conference in 2006. They won their first conference championship in 2014 and advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals after Regional wins over Alabama, Georgia Southern and No. 5 Florida State.
The Owls last won the conference in 2016. Sansing’s 2021 squad went 29-22 overall, 13-8 in conference.
An 11-time Coach of the Year selection, Sansing won two National Coach of the Year awards. He was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009.
“Coach Sansing invested his career preparing KSU student-athletes for success in life and building the ‘Gold Standard’ foundation of our baseball program,” said Milton Overton, Kennesaw State director of athletics.
The school said it would start a search for its sixth baseball coach in 38 years.
