Former Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya was released by the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, according to a report by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport reported the promotion of quarterback Garrett Gilbert from the Panthers practice squad on Monday night signaled Kaaya would be released.

Kaaya was drafted in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, but was claimed by the Panthers in September after being released by Lions.

Kaaya finished the preseason with Detroit completing 16-of-29 passes for 220 yards, two touchdown passes and one interception.

In three seasons at Miami, Kaaya became the school’s all-time leading passer with 9,968 passing yards.
