Two old friends will face each other Friday when Atlanta United plays at Orlando City.

Brad Guzan, introduced as Atlanta United’s newest goalkeeper Tuesday, and Jonathan Spector, signed by Orlando City in the offseason, grew up together in youth soccer in Chicago and then became re-acquainted as pros with the U.S. men’s national team and then in England.

The two became very close when Guzan was at Aston Villa and Spector joined Birmingham in 2011 after five seasons at West Ham.

Spector, 31, said their wives are close friends, and they have children that are close in age.

“…So there’s a definitely a connection there,” he said. “We have a good friendship. But, I know the next question is, ‘Will it affect the game?’ Absolutely not.”

Guzan, 32, said something similar.

“It will be exciting to see him,” Guzan said. “We are going to go down there with a mission to get three points. It’s all about trying to win.”
