The New York Knicks fired coach Jeff Hornacek early Thursday after going 29-53 in his second season with the team.

The Knicks placed 11th in the Eastern Conference this season which was their best finish in the last four seasons.

According to ESPN, Hornacek— who led the Knicks to a 60-104 record in two seasons— had one year left on his contract and was informed of the decision to relieve him of his duties when the team returned after their 110-98 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday.

"Jeff is a true professional who has worked tirelessly for this organization the last two seasons," Knicks president Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry said in a statement. "We sincerely appreciate his efforts and considerable contributions to the team and wish him well in his future endeavors."

David Fizdale, David Blatt and Mark Jackson have emerged as candidates for the head coaching vacancy, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
