South Cobb and North Cobb took turns dominating a quarter in their Region 4-AAAAA game at South Cobb on Friday night.

And it appeared South Cobb’s 21-point third quarter would be more than enough to put North Cobb away. But the Eagles had to hold on until the last play of the game to escape with a 31-23 victory.

South Cobb’s Demarcus Adkins rushed for 215 yards and scored third-quarter touchdowns on runs of 34 and 59 yards, and Marlon Patterson threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Johntavious Mullins to give the Eagles a 31-7 lead with 17 seconds to play in the third quarter.

But North Cobb wasn’t finished yet. The Warriors got 16 points in a two-minute span midway through the fourth quarter and took possession on their 24 with two minutes to play for a last-ditch effort to tie the game.

North Cobb drove to the South Cobb 5-yard line and had a first-and-goal with less than 20 seconds to play. After spiking the ball on first down to stop the clock, Travis Hawkins ran 3 yards to the 2 on second down and threw an incomplete pass on third. His fourth-down pass was tipped away on the game’s final play, preserving the victory for South Cobb.

The teams entered the game in a four-way tie with Hillgrove and Harrison for second place in 4-AAAAA behind McEachern, which already has clinched one of the region’s playoff berths. South Cobb (6-3 overall, 4-2 in 4-AAAAA) can still finish as high as second place in the region.

Despite the loss, North Cobb (5-4, 3-3) remains in the hunt and can get in the playoffs with a victory next week.

North Cobb trailed 10-0 at the end of the first quarter, but it could have been worse as South Cobb had the ball inside the North Cobb 25-yard line three times in the first 12 minutes. South Cobb’s first possession of the game started at the North Cobb 21 after a short punt and a penalty, but the Eagles fumbled it away three plays later. South Cobb scored a touchdown and a field goal in its other first-quarter possessions deep in North Cobb territory.
