Savannah Christian-Clinch County preview
Class A (1 p.m. Saturday): Savannah Christian vs. Clinch County
Savannah Christian’s Will Austin played to limited impact in last year’s Class A state final, a 30-21 loss to Wilcox County, owing to a shoulder injury. Healthy this time around, he figures heavily in the Raiders’ plans.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound junior halfback has been a big-play specialist this fall, in a variety of ways.
“Whatever you ask him to do, that’s what he’s going to do,” Savannah Christian coach Donald Chumley said. “When his number does get called, he can do extraordinary things. I hadn’t realized until this year how fast he is.”
As a runner, Austin scores about once every 11 times he gets the ball (nine touchdowns in 97 rushing attempts) and averages more than 10 yards per carry (he enters the state championship game with 1,000 yards).
“This year, I get a second shot,” Austin said. “Wherever they put me, I just give it my best and things will work out.”
As a receiver, Austin has caught seven passes (for a total of 139 yards, on a team that has 41 pass completions in 14 games) and scored touchdowns on three of them.
And as a defensive back, he has made five tackles for negative yardage (62 total tackles) and has six interceptions.
