High school track and field notebook
Here are some of the top performances from region track meets held last week. The top four finishers in region meets advance to one of the two state sectional meets (each classification has two sectionals) this week. The top eight finishers in each sectional meet will advance to the boys and girls state championship meets next month.
Boys
100 meters: Banneker senior Ryan Clark continued his torrid season by posting a wind-aided time of 10.22 seconds to win the event at the Region 6-AAAA meet held at Miller Grove. The Florida commitment's time is the fastest in the nation this season and would be an all-classification state record if he posts that time in the state championships on May 14-16 in Jefferson. Also, Roswell junior Tyson Spears ran 10.48 to win the Region 5-AAAAAA title. It is the state's second-fastest time this season.
200 meters: Clark also posted the nation's fastest time in the 200 meters with a 20.64 at the regional championships. That is also the nation's fastest time this season. Other stellar performances were turned in by Southwest DeKalb sophomore Terryon Conwell, who ran 21.16 in a preliminary round at the Region 6-AAAA meet; and Cedar Grove senior Darius Freeman's 21.48 while winning the Region 4-AAA championship at Westminster.
400-meter relay: Grayson's foursome posted the fastest time this season in the prelims of the Region 8-AAAAAA championships at Archer with a 41.23, the 20th-fastest time in the nation.
1,600-meter relay: Southwest DeKalb and Banneker raced to the fastest and second-fastest times in the state this season at the Region 6-AAAA championships. Southwest DeKalb ran 3:15.02 while Banneker ran 3:16.16.
