Mike Parris, who resigned earlier this year as head football coach at Heritage-Conyers, was approved this week as coach of region-rival Loganville.
Parris’ Heritage team defeated Loganville 21-7 last season in a game that essentially put Heritage in the playoffs from Region 8-AAAAA and kept Loganville out.
Parris was Heritage’s coach for one season. He resigned in December, less than a month after Heritage lost to Tucker in the first round. Parris was head coach during seven 10-win seasons and two semifinals finishes at Forest Park and Jackson.
The number of GHSA schools making football coaching changes this offseason is at 60, with 19 jobs still open. Other moves include:
- Thomson coach Milan Turner resigned this week, citing family reasons. He led Thomson to a region title in 2012 and Emanuel County Institute to a state title in 2007.
- Frank Barden, who won a state title at Cartersville in 1999, took the head coaching job at Stephens County, where he was offensive coordinator more than 20 years ago.
- Harris Rainbow was fired at Campbell despite improving his victory total in each of three seasons. Campbell was 4-6 in 2013.
- Woodland-Stockbridge hired Steve Davenport, formerly head coach at Savannah State. Davenport was coach at Decatur and Redan before going into college football.
- Oglethorpe County hired Jimbo Hale from Wildwood High in Florida. Hale also coached at Covenant Academy in Macon.
- Monroe Area hired Baker County (Fla.) offensive coordinator Joey Sulkowski to replace the retiring Matt Fligg.
- Jones County coach Dwight Jones started Monday at Harris County, taking over for Tommy Parks, who took the Upson-Lee job.
- Bradwell Institute hired Greg Hill, a quarterback who led Georgia Southern to a national championship in 1999, to replace Adam Carter, who became defensive coordinator at Reinhardt. Hill was an assistant at Statesboro for eight seasons.
- Dutchtown hired Henry County offensive coordinator Mark Myers to replace Kevin Jones, who resigned and was hired at Mount Zion-Jonesboro.
- Kevin Hunt is out as coach at Greenbrier, which finished 0-10 last season. Hunt was promoted from defensive line coach before the 2012 season.
