The top-ranked Johns Creek boys improved to 7-0 in Area 3-AAAAAA last week with a 20-11 victory against No. 10 Northview. The victory puts the Gladiators (11-3) one win away from clinching the title in a tightly contested area race that features the top three teams in Class AAAAAA.

Johns Creek will face third-ranked Lambert on Saturday. If the Gladiators win, they’ll take the championship with No. 2 Centennial likely getting the No. 2 seed and Lambert finishing third. If Lambert wins, it could result in a three-way tie, as all three would have one loss in area play.

Lambert's statement: It won't help them in the Area 3 scrum, but the Lambert boys made a statement Saturday with their 11-6 victory against McCallie (Tenn.). McCallie entered the day ranked No. 3 in the South by LaxMagazine.com and had beaten Johns Creek and Centennial, the top two teams in AAAAAA. The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Longhorns (12-2). They take on Lovett, ranked No. 2 in Class A-AAAAA, on Wednesday, before moving to Saturday's area showdown with Johns Creek.

Watts hits milestone: Westminster girls coach Jay Watts recently became the first Georgia coach to reach the 300-victory plateau. The milestone came in a 21-2 victory against Darlington on April 7. Westminster (13-1) is ranked No. 2 in Georgia in A-AAAAA this season and No. 9 in the South by LaxMagazine.com. The Wildcats, who won the 2013 state title and finished last year as the runners-up, will play at No. 8 Sprayberry on Thursday.

Walton vs. Lassiter: The No. 2 Walton and No. 3 Lassiter girls play Wednesday in a crucial Area 2-AAAAAA game. Walton (10-4) has already lost to top-ranked Milton in league play while Lassiter (10-3) is unbeaten in the area and won't face Milton until its final game of the regular season on April 28. Wednesday's winner will have the inside track for the area's No. 2 seed. All three of Lassiter's losses came against out-of-state competition during the first week in April. The Trojans defeated Etowah (19-5) last week. Walton's only loss to a Georgia team was against Milton in early March. The Lady Raiders dropped a pair of close games against out-of-state competition April 4 in the Am-Lax Challenge in St. Petersburg, but have won their last two games since by a combined total of 45-6.
