With the football season in the rearview mirror, it’s time to shift gears to basketball, where most teams are just getting into region play. Every Tuesday, we’ll take a look at 2A’s ranked teams and where they stand at this point in the season.

Score Atlanta has complete rankings for the boys and girls. All records and stats are sourced from information provided to MaxPreps as of Jan. 4. Please note that all scheduled games mentioned here are subject to cancellation or postponement due to COVID-19 concerns.

Boys

1. Pace Academy Knights (10-1)

Region record: 3-0 in 6-2A

Notes: The Knights’ lone loss came in their Nov. 21 opener to 3A’s No. 1 Sandy Creek, by a score of 63-59. Since then they’ve racked up notable wins over 4A’s No. 4 Marist (58-38 on Nov. 24), 6A’s No. 6 South Cobb (84-60 on Dec. 19), 7A’s No. 8 North Gwinnett (73-60 on Dec. 21) and 7A’s No. 3 Grayson (66-55 on Dec. 22). They’re scheduled to host KIPP (4-5, 1-1) on Tuesday and travel to No. 3 Lovett (7-3, 2-0) on Friday.

2. Swainsboro Tigers (5-1)

Region record: 2-0 in 2-2A

Notes: The defending 2A champion Tigers’ only defeat came on Dec. 5 to 57-50 Effingham County, an unranked team in 6A. They’d rebound three days later with a big region win over No. 4 Woodville-Tompkins, 57-55. They play back-to-backs starting Friday at a 1-10 (0-3) Toombs County team they beat 69-46 on Dec. 11, then they host Bacon County (5-1, 2-1).

3. Lovett Lions (7-3)

Region record: 2-0 in 6-2A

Notes: The Lions’ losses include 5A’s No. 3 St. Pius X (70-60 on Nov. 24), No. 6A Shiloh (65-63 on Nov. 27) and 4A’s No. 6 Luella (68-65 on Dec. 19). Their most notable win is over 3A’s No. 10 GAC, 65-52 on Dec. 5. They travel to Washington (3-6, 0-1) on Tuesday before hosting top-ranked Pace Academy (10-1, 3-0) on Friday.

4. Woodville-Tompkins Wolverines (7-1)

Region record: 2-1 in 2-2A

Notes: The Wolverines have benefitted from playing a local non-region schedule with wins over Islands, Beach, Savannah and Groves (twice), and their lone loss came on Dec. 8 on the road to No. 2 Swainsboro in a key region matchup. They rebounded to beat No. 9 Vidalia on the road 65-55 three days later. Up next is another non-region game against a Beach team they beat 53-48 on Dec. 1. They close the week with a back-to-back home-and-away slate, first with Vidalia (6-3, 1-1) on Friday, then on Saturday at East Laurens (0-6, 0-3), a team they beat 65-30 on Dec. 4.

5. Washington County Golden Hawks (3-0)

Region record: 1-0 in 3-2A

Notes: The Hawks’ season thus far consists of wins over Burke County (68-53 on Dec. 8), No. 7 Laney (54-51 on Dec. 11) and 69-28 in their region opener against Southwest on Dec. 18. They were supposed to travel to Monticello (1-6, 1-1) on Tuesday, but that game has been rescheduled to Jan. 16. They host Dodge County (4-5, 1-1) on Friday.

6. Thomasville Bulldogs (6-1)

Region record: 1-0 in 1-2A

Notes: The Bulldogs’ most notable win was over 1A-Public’s Lanier County, 89-78 on Nov. 23. Their lone loss was to Bainbridge (76-72 on Dec. 12), a team they beat 46-42 in their No. 21 season opener. They play two region road games this week, starting with Cook (2-6, 0-1) on Friday, then Worth County (4-6, 0-0) on Saturday.

7. Westside Patriots (8-1)

Region record: 1-0 in 4-2A

Notes: The Patriots have stayed local thus far, hosting and beating Effhingham County 67-48 in their opener, then playing Greenbrier, Academy of Richmond County, Aquinas (twice) Lakeside (twice) and 6A’s No. 8 Evans, which was their lone loss, 77-66 on Dec. 11. They beat No. 8 Laney 64-57 at home in their last game on Dec. 15. They play one game this week, on the road at Putnam County (0-2, 0-0).

8. Laney Wildcats (3-3)

Region record: 1-1 in 4-2A

Notes: The Wildcats have beaten Hephzibah, 3A’s No. 7 Cross Creek and Glenn Hills, while losing to 6A’s No. 8 Evans, No. 5 Washington County and No. 7 Westside. They play on the road at Jefferson County (0-4, 0-0) Tuesday and Oglethorpe County (2-2, 0-0) Friday. They’re scheduled to close the week Saturday by hosting a Strom Thurmond (Johnston, S.C.) team that’s 2-2.

9. Vidalia Indians (6-3)

Region record: 1-1 in 2-2A

Notes: The Indians have played one ranked teams thus far, hosting region rival and No. 4 Woodville-Tompkins on Dec. 11, losing 65-55. They host Toombs County (1-10, 0-3) on Tuesday and travel to Woodville-Tompkins (7-1, 2-1) on Friday.

10. Banks County Leopards (10-5)

Region record: 0-0 in 8-2A

Notes: No ranked team has played more than the Leopards, whose most notable win came against 1A Public’s No. 7 Lincoln County (52-50 on Dec. 30). They lost to the only other ranked team they played, 6A’s No. 9 Heritage-Conyers, 74-70 on Dec. 28. They play games at home this week, starting with region opponent Elbert County (4-6, 0-0) on Tuesday, then East Jackson (3-2) on Saturday.

Girls

1. Rabun County Lady Wildcats (9-0)

Region record: 0-0 in 8-2A

Notes: The Lady Wildcats’ impressive resume includes wins over 3A’s No. 6 Stephens County (65-55 on Dec. 1 and again on Dec. 31, 51-41), 4A’s No. 7 Cambridge (60-36 on Dec. 22) and No. 9 Fannin County (66-43). This week they play a pair of non-region games at home against Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (0-3) on Thursday and Towns County (1-3) on Saturday.

2. Early County Lady Bobcats (4-0)

Region record: 1-0 in 1-2A

Notes: The Lady Bobcats opened region play on Jan. 2 with a 60-31 road win over Thomasville. This week they host 1A Public’s Miller County (0-0) Tuesday before region away-and-home back-to-backs starting Friday against Worth County (0-7, 0-0), then Berrien (5-1, 1-0).

3. Woodville-Tompkins Lady Wolverines (8-0)

Region record: 3-0 in 2-2A

Notes: The Lady Wolverines beat the only ranked opponent they’ve played — 3A’s No. 2 Beach — 49-45 on Dec. 1. They play three times this week: Tuesday at Jeff Davis (1-3, 0-2), Friday vs. Vidalia (3-6, 0-2) and Saturday at East Laurens, who they beat 51-34 on Dec. 4.

4. Washington County Lady Golden Hawks (3-0)

Region record: 1-0 in 3-2A

Notes: They Lady Golden Hawks beat 3A’s Burke County, Laney and, in their region opener, Southwest. They play just once this week, Friday at home against No. 8 Dodge County (6-1, 2-0).

5. Elbert County Lady Leopards (8-1)

Region record: 0-0 in 8-2A

Notes: The Lady Leopards have played two ranked opponents thus far, beating 1A Public’s No. 7 Georgia Military 50-29 on Dec. 15 and losing 48-42 to 5A’s No. 8 Loganville on Dec. 29. They play three times this week: Tuesday at No. 10 Banks County (10-6) in the region opener for both teams; Friday at home against 4A’s Cedar Shoals (5-2) and Saturday against 8-2A’s Union County (1-3).

6. Heard County Lady Braves (10-3)

Region record: 0-0 in 5-2A

Notes: The Lady Braves’ only three losses have come to Alabama schools. This week they play just once — a non-region game at Lithia Springs (5-3).

7. Josey Lady Eagles (2-3)

Region record: 0-0 in 4-2A

Notes: The Lady Eagles’ losing record is the result of stiff competition, which includes losses to 7A’s No. 6 Parkview (63-41), 3A’s No. 3 Cross Creek (55-39) and 1A Private’s top-ranked St. Francis (62-54). They play at Butler (2-3, 1-0) on Tuesday and host Putnam County (1-2, 0-0) on Friday.

8. Dodge County Lady Indians (6-1)

Region record: 2-0 in 3-2A

Notes: The Lady Indians beat the only ranked team they’ve played, 1A Public’s No. 10 Dooly County, by a score of 50-41, with their lone loss coming to 6A’s Houston County by a score of 52-40. They play just once this week, at No. 4 Washington County (3-0, 1-0), on Friday.

9. Dade County Lady Wolverines (3-1)

Region record: 1-0 in 7-2A

Notes: The Lady Wolverines’ lone loss came to Alabama’s Fyffe, 52-40, in their season opener and their wins have come against 3A’s No. 9 Sonoraville (52-48), Pepperell (58-31) and Alabama’s Sylvania (70-64). They play three road games this week, starting with Gordon Central (1-5, 1-2) on Tuesday, then Fannin County (6-4, 2-0) on Friday and at Alabama’s North Sand Mountain on Saturday.

10. Banks County Lady Leopards (10-6)

Region record: 0-0 in 8-2A

Notes: Like Banks County’s boys team, the Lady Leopards have played more games than any other team in the rankings. The’ve played two ranked teams, losing to 1A Private’s No. 6 Wesleyan (66-36) and 4A’s No. 1 Jefferson (78-47 and 67-43). This week they host No. 5 Elbert County (8-1) in the region opener for both teams, and at 1A Public’s Towns County (1-3) on Friday.
