HS football: How the top 10 fared

Last week: Beat Grayson 35-0. North Gwinnett inflicted the worst margin of defeat in Grayson history, leading 35-0 in the third quarter and setting off a running clock. The Bulldogs scored on an interception return (Jaye Stackhouse), fumble return (Jacob McCoy) and two safeties (Avery Elford, Noah Lyman). Hayden Sphire was 13-of-25 passing for 136 yards. North ran only 34 offensive plays and had just 10 yards rushing. North Gwinnett is No. 1 in the AJC rankings for the first time since a 9-0 start in 2006. Next: Sept. 13 at Norcross (0-1)

Last week: Beat Mundy's Mill 41-12. New starting QB Quantarius Neely, a sophomore, threw two first-half touchdowns, and RB Jeremiah Kirkland scored two touchdowns. Last week: Beat Lassiter 42-28. RB Taj Griffin (154 yards) and QB Ty Clemons (128) each went over 100 yards rushing for the second consecutive game. Lassiter, which entered ranked No. 8, was within 35-28 with 8:43 left, but McEachern scored on its next drive. Last week: Beat Jackson 31-9. Mary Persons had 355 yards rushing. John Perkins had 131 in 11 carries. Jackson was held to 111 yards of total offense. This is the first time since 2000 that Mary Persons has been ranked this early in a season. Next: Friday at Jones County (1-0)

Last week: Beat Elbert County 46-7. Six Buford players scored touchdowns as Buford took a 46-0 lead in the third quarter against a team that it beat only 14-3 last season. Next: Friday at Gainesville (1-0)

Last week: Beat Westminster 27-13. St. Pius led 27-0 after Thomas O'Leary's 46-yard field goal with 8:05 left. O'Leary also made a 22-yard field and kicked four of six kickoffs for touchbacks. QB Joey Connors rushed for 82 of St. Pius' 282 yards on the ground. Next: Friday at North Oconee (0-0)

Last week: Beat Spalding 44-14. Georgia Tech-committed players scored all six of Lamar's touchdowns. Lawrence Austin returned the second-half kickoff 95 yards for a 44-0 lead. Last week: Beat Commerce 40-0. Jefferson avenged its lone defeat of 2012 in a series that goes back 50 years. Evan Shirreffs, younger brother of Bryant (who led Jefferson to a state title last season), was 23-of-33 passing for 292 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 51 yards and scored on a 46-yard run.
