Hawks-Grizzlies postgame quotes

What they said after the Hawks’ 90-82 exhibition loss to the Grizzlies Sunday:

“The way we played in the third quarter, if we can play like that for longer stretches of the game that is what we are talking to our group about. Playing through those cycles and playing offense to defense and defense to offense. I think there were stretches in the third quarter where you could see how we can play and what it will look like.”

- Coach Mike Budenholzer on third-quarter play

“It would be good not to get in a hole early. There were a couple players on their team who had pretty special performances. They were lights out. Jerryd Bayless, did he ever miss?”

- Budenholzer on early struggles

“It’s a good preseason game - a lot to take away from it, a lot to learn, things to work on and improve and some positives.”

- Budenholzer on takeaways from game

“We need to look at the film a little bit but so far in the preseason, not just today, we are getting a lot of good shots. Unlike Jerryd Bayless, we are not on fire. I feel like the group is getting good shots, getting good looks. At times, obviously, it’s not perfect. I think the 6-for-26 that we started, without looking at the film, I felt like we had a lot of good shots, we just didn’t make them.”

- Budenholzer on poor start

“It was just a group discussion. We said ‘Let’s get into this. Let’s play with effort.’ It’s preseason but we still need to play. It’s wasn’t anything that we didn’t know. When we play hard, we’re pretty good. When we let teams attack, like any other team, we’re not that good.”

- Elton Brand on second-half talk

“My biggest thing is I’m going to play hard no matter what. I wanted them to feed off me. At the same time, we are in practice and everybody is playing hard, talking to each other, getting physical with each other. Let’s do the same thing out there. It’s preseason but you have to start building winning. We just got together. We are trying to build chemistry and it starts here in preseason.”

- DeMarre Carroll on second-half talk

“It’s preseason. As we get to the season guys are going to turn it up. As you can see, Paul turned it up. Everybody is new. We can’t just turn it on. It’s just building chemistry. That is the biggest thing for us.”

- Carroll on Hawks’ 1-4 preseason

“We’re getting used to playing with one another as you can see. I thought we did really good tonight. As you can see, Paul and Al are getting used to playing with each other. They both played really good tonight. We’re just continuing to grow every game.”

- Jeff Teague on Hawks’ performance

“I thought we were good, especially in the third quarter. I feel like we really picked up our energy. That’s a step in the right direction. I’m actually really happy, even though obviously we didn’t win the game.”

- Al Horford on Hawks’ performance

“That’s amazing. Nobody committed more than three so it got spread around. I’m speechless. I don’t know that I’ve seen a team have 26 turnovers. You can’t defend against turnovers.”

- Memphis coach David Joerger on team’s 26 turnovers

“We just need to continue to play. Playing with these guys makes them game a lot easier. We obviously have to big-name stars in Zach (Randolph) and Marc (Gasol) and playing with them opens a lot of things up. It’s been great. Last year we got stuck and stagnant (on offense), especially in the playoffs, but as long as we keep the ball moving at all times things will be fine. It can be anybody’s night as long as we keep the ball moving.”

- Grizzlies’ Jerryd Bayless on 22-point performance
