PGA Tour, golf writers donate to scholarship in honor of Furman Bisher
The PGA Tour and the Golf Writers Association of America will honor Furman Bisher by donating $10,000 to a scholarship fund at the University of North Carolina in his memory.
The gift will be used to support the Furman Bisher Medal at The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC.
Bisher, the legendary sports writer and columnist for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, died in March at the age of 93 after a 59-year career. He born in Denton, N.C., and was a 1938 UNC journalism graduate.
Friends and colleagues started an endowment for the Furman Bisher Medal in 2008. A $5,000 award and a medal bearing Bisher’s likeness is given annually to a graduating senior or graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in sports journalism. The medal may be given to a rising junior or senior or current graduate student in exceptional cases.
The announcement of the donation will be made by PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem during a news conference Wednesday before the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.
