Roswell's Brandon Nelson won the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship on Sunday by defeating Fred Rescigno Jr. 1 up at the Rivermont Golf and Country Club.
Nelson, a member and reigning club champ at Rivermont, had a 2-up advantage through 14 holes, only to bogey the par 4 15th, which reduced his lead to one with three holes remaining.
Rescigno parred the par 4 16th to make the match all square, but Nelson parred 17 and Rescigno bogeyed to restore the 1-up lead. The players halved No. 18 to give Nelson the victory.
Nelson advanced to the finals by defeating Marietta's Mel Mendenhall (2 and 1), Marietta's Matthew Hayes (2 up), Peachtree Corners' Mike Cromer (3 and 1) and Suwanee's Dave Poteet (1 up).
