ATHENS — Georgia basketball, in desperate need of some height in its lineup, addressed that on Monday when it received a verbal commitment from Tyrone Baker.
Baker, a 6-foot-9 forward from Missouri City, Texas, committed to the Bulldogs on Monday. The 3-star prospect plans to sign with Georgia in the spring period and enroll at UGA this summer.
“1000% committed,” Baker said in an announcement on his Twitter account, tagging UGA basketball and coach Tom Crean.
Baker moved to Texas last year from Fort Myers, Fla., where he averaged 20.7 points and 10.7 rebounds at Riverdale High as a junior. As a senior, Baker is averaging 15.2 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game for Hightower High, which is 11-2 so far this season.
Baker ranks as the 248th prospect in the country, according to 247Sports. He chose the Bulldogs over Dayton, Florida Atlantic, Florida International and East Carolina, among others.
Baker is listed as 6-10 on some recruiting sites. Georgia currently has just two players listed at 6-9 on its roster in sophomore Tyron McMillan and Josh Taylor, and only McMillan plays regularly. At the moment, 6-8 sophomore Toumani Camara handles most of the frontcourt duties for the Bulldogs.
Baker is the second commitment for Georgia’s incoming class of 2021. He joins 6-5 wing Camron McDowell of McEachern.
Following Saturday’s road win at Ole Miss, the Bulldogs are 8-4 (1-4 SEC) in their third season under Crean.
