Third-string running back Terron Ward, who’s been inactive the past three games, will back up Pro Bowler Devonta Freeman against the Carolina Panthers at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Georgia Dome.
The Falcons suffered a major blow when running back Tevin Coleman slipped in the shower and suffered a concussion on Wednesday. He’s in the league concussion protocol and was declared out of the game on Friday.
Ward played in the first 11 games of the season. He has rushed 28 times for 81 yards and has a touchdown run. Ward, an undrafted rookie from Oregon State, also has nine catches for 73 yards.
Along with Coleman, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett (shoulder), linebacker Tyler Starr, cornerback Akeem King, guard Ben Garland, tackle Bryce Harris and defensive tackle Joey Mbu were designated inactive players.
The Panthers inactives: wide receiver Brenton Bersin, running back Jonathan Stewart, safety Dean Marlowe, running back Brandon Wegher, linebacker David Mayo, wide receiver Kevin Norwood and defensive tackle Kyle Love.
Cameron Artis-Payne will start at running back for Stewart.
