What the Falcons had to say after their 34-20 win over the Bucs
Here’s what the Falcons had to say after their 34-20 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday:
MATT RYAN, quarterback
On the pass from Mohamed Sanu to Julio Jones:
"We've mostly done it in walkthrough. Those guys have thrown a lot of passes to each other too. They work on throwing to each other all the time. It was cool to see it in live action for the first time. It was a perfect pass. Mohamed Sanu is a stud. It was a really great throw and good adjustment by Julio at the end. It was very timely. That was a huge play on a third-and-one situation."
On Tevin Coleman's performance:
"I thought Tevin Coleman played awesome. First and foremost, I'm just so happy for him and his girlfriend to be able to have twins yesterday. Then he got some rest and came out to play the way he did today, scoring two touchdowns. He was able to take home two game balls for his boy and his girl. Yeah, it's pretty special. I'm really happy for him. He's a professional, showing up and playing the way that he did. It's a pretty special weekend for him. We were all excited for Tevin."
On the offensive success:
"I think converting third downs was huge. I think we were good on third down today. We were 11 of 14, if I'm not mistaken, on third down. When you convert at that level on third down, it keeps you on the field and keeps drives going. It's a good recipe for success. I think we've also been good in the red zone. We had the one turnover in the red area today, but we were very efficient when we got down into the red area. The combination of those two things has been very good the last few weeks."
On the one-on-one isolations with Mohamed Sanu and Julio Jones:
"We kind of knew coming into it that we were going to get some one-on-one situations. I thought Mike Smith did a great job of dialing up some pressures at some times to keep us off balance. They got us on a couple of third downs that were good calls. We knew we were going to have one-on-one opportunities. Julio made some great plays. Mohamed made some great plays, too."
On Ricardo Allen and Keanu Neal:
"I think there's a mindset on our defense. They talk about it all the time. You defend every blade of grass. Sometimes you give up some drives, but those guys, they really have a knack for keeping people out of the end zone. They really live by defending basically every blade of grass. I thought they did a nice job of that today. In the fourth down situation, Tampa was aggressive trying to take a shot there into the end zone. Our guys stepped up big. I thought that was huge momentum and a huge play in that game. After that turnover, they were going down the field to get that stop. For us to go back down and score was exciting to see."
On how it helps the offense when Julio Jones performs well:
"If we could just dial up 250 yards from him every week, it would be a pretty good recipe for success. He's so explosive. He's an unbelievable talent and an unbelievable competitor. He's so humble. Obviously it gets us going, for sure. We had a third down situation where we threw it to him on the left side versus man-to-man coverage. He's physical, goes up, and makes a great play. That was one of the plays that iced that game. It was impressive to see. Hopefully we can find ways to do that week in and week out."
On why he doesn't always throw to Julio:
"That's a good point. We could keep it simple. I thought today was perfect. I thought when we got the opportunities and he was singled up, we did. We were aggressive and went to him. It's not often that we get that many single opportunities a game, but we got that today. I think historically, we have done that. When he's gotten a single matchup, he's been incredibly explosive. I thought Steve Sarkisian did a really nice job with us. We do make an effort to try and find ways to get him going because he's so special. Today was one of the days that he went off."
On teasing Mohamed Sanu about the pass:
"No. That was a pretty good ball. I didn't have much to say about that one. That was about as good as it gets in terms of a throw. When you see that, you basically keep your mouth shut and give him a high five."
On what option he was on the touchdown play with Mohamed Sanu and Julio Jones:
"I guess 11. If there are 10 guys out there, I was number 11. I told him I was open, though. We only needed one. I hear that enough from them, so I was throwing it back at them."
KEANU NEAL, strong safety
On pass to Mike Evans on fourth down. "He's one of their big time players. They were definitely going to try to find him."
On Poole and Trufant going out. "Guys came in and contributed. Rico came in and played nickel corner. C.J. and Kazee, they all contributed. We had to empty the bench. Sometimes that happens."
On the Trufant hit. "I owe him something. I feel back for him."
On the fourth quarter stop. "It was huge. We came together and finish. That's part of what we do here. We've been talking about finishing and the opportunity was there and we took advantage of it."
MOHAMED SANU, wide receiver/quarterback
On his touchdown pass. "I just saw him take off and let it go."
On bobbling the ball. "I ran into the running back a little bit, but then I got a good handle on it."
TAKKARIST MCKINLEY, defensive end
ON the end of the gam. "The biggest thing for us was finishing. I think we had them like 27-6. On defense we have to learn how to finish out games. Ain't no reason why that game should have got as close as it was. We just have to learn how to finish a little bit. We got the W and that's all that matters."
On Ryan Fitzpatrick's ability to run. "Look a lot of the good quarterbacks in the league, he can run. Regardless if he runs 4.4., 4.5, 4.6 or whatever. If there is a lane wide open, you should take. As a (defensive) line, we have to do better at collapsing the pocket and stopping off the lane so he can't run. We just have to be more discipline."
On losing the lead. "Next play mentality. We just had to get this stop and get a win."
On the fourth-down stop. "We just knew that we had to make a stop. The offense went down and fumbled. For us, we couldn't give them any points. Getting that stop on defense really helped us win the game."
On stopping the run. "They just used a lot of personnel. They did a good job of keeping us guessing with the different personnel groupings."
JAKE MATTHEWS, left tackle
On the offenses mindset heading into their final drive:
"I think everyone knew the implications if we didn't move the ball they would get it back with time left, but we kind of went out there with the same mindset we have all game; each play at a time, just chipping away. So we did a really good job with that, kept the chains moving, and ended up scoring which put them in a really bad spot to end the game."
On Julio Jones historic night:
"I'll catch the very end of a lot of stuff, but yeah he's really special. It's no surprise to see him do stuff like that, he's a really good player so I'm really happy for him."
RICARDO ALLEN, free safety
On playing the corner position:
"I was a corner my whole life. I played corner all through college, all through high school, and I've only been playing free safety going on three years. When they needed me, I just had to go into the old book and get it out."
On preparing for worst case scenarios:
"I've always been real big in my details, just in case if something were to happen. You can't dress everybody in the secondary role, so you have to be ready for anything that can happen. That's why I always talk to [Damontae] Kazee , and make sure that he is ready because he is my counterpart. If I have to go somewhere else, then he has to go to free safety. He and I are always working together, and I am always studying for worst case scenarios."
On the defense's performance:
"We showed that we are willing to go out there and finish. We can do a little better. There are some things that we need to correct, but we just showed that we're willing to finish and we're willing to fight. No matter what it takes."
GRADY JARRETT, defensive tackle
On the support of teammates when mistakes happen:
"We have our brothers' back with everything we do, and there wasn't any fear in anyone's hearts. It was time to go out there and get a stop; so that's what we did, and we ended up winning the game."
On teammates stepping up after injuries:
"Guys did step up, but at the same time, when guys go down, everybody has to be prepared in a way to where there isn't a drop-off. It's hard to replace guys like [Desmond] Trufant and [Brian] Poole, guys who are the best at what they do, but at the end of the day, there is no excuse. For us as a defense, guys have to always be prepared and have a "next man up" mentality."
