Falcons wide receiver Mohamed Sanu was back catching punts with Kenjon Barner and Justin Hardy on Monday.

“He’s somebody who’s always been on my mind to be a backup in that spot,” Falcons coach Dan Quinn said. “So, I approached him a few weeks about it. He said, ‘Yeah’ because he’d done it earlier in his career. I said, ‘Let’s rekindle that fire.’ ”

The Falcons have been looking to improve their return game. Last season, Hardy was the primary returner. The Falcons drafted Marcus Green in the sixth round to compete for the position, but he was released after a shaky exhibition season. He was signed to the Eagles’ practice squad.

Sanu is the team’s versatile No. 2 receiver.

“He’s got such good change of direction, and that is what a returner is, can you make the first one miss,” Quinn said. “His hands are fantastic. I (said) I’d feel comfortable if you were back there as a backup punt returner.”
