Quarterback Matt Ryan has thrown five interceptions in the past two games and eight over the past five games. The Falcons’ four-game losing streak can be traced to his errant throws.
With the playoffs on the line, Ryan needs to rise up and play an interception-free game.
“When it comes to interceptions and stuff, there are all types of different reasons,” offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. “It could happen because it’s tipped, sometimes it’s missed reads, sometimes it’s missed throws and sometimes it’s drops.”
Ryan hopes the return of running back Devonta Freeman will help not only the running game, but also the passing attack.
Freeman has 48 catches and is Ryan’s favorite check-down receiver. With his safety valve back on the field, Ryan may not be tempted to force passes into coverage.
“Devonta is a huge part, not only of our offense, but of our team,” Ryan said. “He’s been extremely productive for us this year.”
Freeman suffered a concussion early against the Colts on Nov. 22. He missed last week’s loss to the Vikings.
“The addition of Devonta and his versatility and our ability to use him in all facets of the game is huge for us,” Ryan said.
In the previous meeting with Tampa Bay, a 23-20 Buccaneers overtime win, Ryan had one interception, but there were three fumbles.
Freeman rushed for 88 yards on 21 carries and had six catches for 43 yards.
Ryan played a key role in the players-only meeting that was held Monday.
“That’s a good part of a team is to have good solid leadership guys that voice stuff to get it all going in the same direction,” Ryan said. “To me, that’s the key for all of us to be on the same page.”
