Calvin Johnson has decided to retire, according to a report from ESPN.

The Detroit Lions star wide receiver from Georgia Tech informed his coach about his decision to leave football Sunday morning.

Adam Schefter confirmed the news.

Johnson was the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL just two years ago.

The 30-year-old from Newnan appeared on the cover of Madden 13.

He announced after the 2015 season he would make a decision on the future of his playing career. Johnson's coach, Jim Caldwell, encouraged him to take all the time he needed to decide.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reached out to Johnson's agent.
