Falcons defensive end Takkarist McKinley will be held out of practice on Sunday, according to coach Dan Quinn.

McKinley has a contusion on his surgically repaired right shoulder.

Also, running back Ito Smith (foot) and Ty Sambrailo (hand) will not practice at Mercedes Benz Stadium before a large crowd on Sunday.

“We’ll just take them day-by-day and see where they get to,” Quinn said.

Near the end of the second training camp practice on Saturday, McKinley was being checked out by the trainers.

“It was a contusion that came through,” Quinn said. “For us, even though it’s a padded day we are going to be more mindful of him maybe through the first two weeks of camp. It could be some other days (that he’s out) and I’ll schedule them.”

McKinley, who’s coming back from the left shoulder surgery in February, initially was diagnosed with a bruise. He also had right shoulder surgery in March 2017 and that was the area of concern Saturday. With about 30 minutes to go in the two-hour practice, Falcons trainer Marty Lauzon was on the sideline checking McKinley’s right arm. After checking the right arm, he lifted both arms from the elbow a few times.

The Falcons are counting on McKinley to replace Adrian Clayborn, who led the team in sacks last season, but wasn’t re-signed.

Smith, the fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft, is trying to earn the third running back spot.

Sambrailo was the top backup tackle last season. He played in 15 games and made two starts at right tackle.
