FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones, who was nearly unstoppable at times last season, was named to the Associated Press' All-Pro team on Friday.
Jones, who was in his fifth-year in the NFL, caught 136 passes for 1,871 yards and eight touchdowns.
On a 27-yard catch in the fourth quarter against the Saints in the regular-season finale, Jones passed Jerry Rice for second all-time on the single season receiving yardage list (1,848, 1995).
Jones is one of three players all-time to record 1,800-plus receiving yards in a single season and he is one of five Falcons players to record 1,800-plus yards from scrimmage in a single season (1,871).
Jones and Pittsburgh wide receiver Antonio Brown each finished the season with 136 receptions, which tied them for second on the NFL’s single season reception list. (Marvin Harrison, 143, 2002).
They were the wide receivers on the team.
Carolina, with an NFL-best 15-1 record, had the most All-Pros with six: quarterback Cam Newton (Westlake High), fullback Mike Tolbert (Douglasville), center Ryan Kalil, linebackers Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis (Georgia), and cornerback Josh Norman.
Also, Eric Berry, of Atlanta and Creekside High, 2015 was a particularly special season. He was diagnosed with lymphoma and this time a year ago was undergoing chemotherapy. He returned to form and helped Chiefs make the playoffs as they won their final 10 games.
“It’s an incredible honor. It means a lot to me,” said Berry, who also made the 2013 team. “Football’s a team game, so I have to give credit to those guys around me as well. We’ve been hungry from the get-go. I don’t know how to explain it, but I think you see it throughout our play. I think our play speaks for itself.”
