HEAD COACH MIKE SMITH
Opening statement
"We are extremely disappointed in the way that the game finished. We've got to be much better. We've got to coach much better. We have to play better."
On the missed scoring opportunities
“Those are redzone situations that we would have liked to have put the ball in the end zone. We know that against a good offense and quarterback like Eli Manning that when you kick field goals when you get down there you’re really are putting yourself behind. We have been good in the redzone. Our redzone efficiency wasn’t as good. I thought we did a good job getting down there, but we didn’t execute when we got into the redzone.”
On the third down efficiency
“I think that we didn’t complete the ball. We were under duress there in the second half at times. We weren’t able to throw the ball on time. The integrity of the protection (broke down) and the quarterback had to move around and we weren’t able to convert.”
On the decision to go for it on fourth down
“I believe that was at 4:45 (left in the game) and we had talked all during the week, that if that came up, we would go for it. We felt like we had a good play. We just didn’t execute. To me, it was a very makeable fourth down. In this position, you make decisions and you can’t have regrets. You make the decisions that you think are the best for you and your football team to win the ball game. That was the thing that I felt like was going to give us the best opportunity to win the football game. We needed to convert, go down and score a touchdown.”
WIDE RECEIVER RODDY WHITE
On promising to score a touchdown
“Throughout the game I felt that we had some opportunities, but we couldn’t punch it in on the goal line.”
QUARTERBACK MATT RYAN
On the offensive line
“I thought our guys battled today. I thought in the first half our guys did a really nice job, mixing the run and the pass and we just got out of rhythm in the second half. Really, other than the explosive play by Antone (Smith), we weren’t able to get much going.”
On blowing a 10-point lead
“It’s very tough when you have 10-point league in the second half. You feel like you have some momentum. It’s difficult.”
On going for it on fourth down late
“I thought we had an opportunity to convert. We were still in the game at that point. It just didn’t work it. We didn’t get the job done collectively.”
DEFENSIVE END OSI UMENYIORA
On the second-half
“They made some adjustments. We made some good adjustments coaching-wise, but we weren’t able to execute what our coaches were trying to tell us to do. We fell short.”
On the team’s struggling pass rush
“I always feel like I could help the team out more, but whatever they ask me to do is what I’m going to go out there and do.”
On the 2-3 record
“We’re 2-3, man. We need to find a way to put some wins together. We’ve got a very good football team. We’re just inconsistent right now. We’ll look at the tape, and we’ll see what happened this week.”
PUNTER MATT BOSHER
On the roughing the punter call
“I was just punting the ball, trying to get the ball down inside the 10. That was kind of about it.”
On his shanked punt
“On that last one, I definitely didn’t execute what we were trying to do. I have to get better this week and move on to the next game.”
CENTER PETER KONZ
On the line
“We you are on the road, you always have to play hard. There can’t be any lags. You just have to keep battling. This is something that we’ll learn from and move forward with.”
On the redzone woes
“We pride ourselves on scoring in the red zone. We pride ourselves on finishing and that’s really what we want to do. When you don’t finished, you have to go look back and see what happened. It could just be a block here and a block there. That’s what need to improve on. We need to be more precise.”
CORNERBACK ROBERT ALFORD
On the loss
“This is very disappointing. Like I say, we just have to finish.”
Thoughts on Giants rookie Odell Beckham Jr.
“Everybody in the NFL is good. When you get out there, you just have to execute. That’s about it.”
On losing on the road
“It’s very troubling, but we are going to get it together. We are going to bounce back.”
