Comments from Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson following the team’s Wednesday practice.
“It’s like I was telling our guys, today was day six. We’re almost halfway through. It goes really fast so you have to take advantage. I’ve been pleased with the effort and the way guys are flying around trying to practice. Like always, there’s a lot of things we’ve got to get better at and fine-tune, but I think the effort’s there, and as long as that’s the case, you’ve got a chance to get better. Trying to find some starters in some places and some depth in others, kind of like every spring.”
On the B-back competition between KirVonte Benson and Quaide Weimerskirch to back up Dedrick Mills:
“They’re playing. Dedrick will be the starter. They do some good and some bad. KirVonte has looked good at times with the ball in his hands. They’ve both got to do a better job blocking. And Quaide’s tough, but I don’t think anybody has distinguished themselves as winning that battle.”
On the walk-on specialists this spring competing before the arrival of signees Pressley Harvin and Brenton King:
“We’ve got guys who are older that have been in the program. Grant Aasen’s been here for a while; he punted last year in a game. Our kicker (Shawn Davis) has been here, too, and they’ll be able to compete when they come in. The last couple days, because of the weather, we haven’t done much special teams, because we’ve been indoors. We’ll do a little more on Friday, we’ll get back to it.”
On the competition to be in the wide receiver rotation behind Ricky Jeune and Brad Stewart:
“Jalen Camp would be the third receiver right now. After that, we don’t have another one right now. They’re all together.”
On the linebacker competition:
“Victor (Alexander) has had a good spring, I think, to this point in competing, and we’ve signed a bunch of linebackers, so there’s going to be a lot of competing in fall camp when those guys come in. Victor’s played some a year ago. Tre Jackson’s played a little bit in there. Brant (Mitchell). Tyler Cooksey’s finally healthy, he’s playing in there. Terrell Lewis has played. There’s some guys that have played. David Curry. I mean, there’s a bunch of guys that have played.”
