Freshman defensive back Shaquille Jones has been dismissed from Georgia’s football team, coach Mark Richt announced Sunday night.

“We have certain expectations and standards that we require of all our players,” Richt said in a statement. “When those expectations and standards are not met, the opportunity to be a part of our program is sacrificed.”

Georgia did not provide a reason for Jones’ dismissal. However, the Clarke County Jail booking report shows that a Shaquille Jones with the same year of birth as the Georgia player was arrested Sunday afternoon on a misdemeanor charge of theft by shoplifting. He was released on $1,500 bond at 4:53 p.m.

Jones becomes the fourth defensive back lost by the Bulldogs in the past 12 days: Shattle Fenteng requires shoulder surgery that is expected to sideline him for the season; Sheldon Dawson left the team, reportedly over playing time; and Rico Johnson was medically disqualified.

Jones had played in one game this season.
