The Westminster Schools defensive end Cortez Alston committed to Georgia Tech on Dec. 21 after recruiting effort from signing class member and future Tech defensive back Tre Swilling.
Alston admits that Swilling, who will play on Tech’s defense along with Alston and Swilling’s brother and future Tech linebacker Bruce Jordan-Swilling in the fall, had some influence on his decision.
“He was kind of talking to me in November and we were talking back-and-forth and he was just explaining why he chose Tech and all those other things,” Alston said. “He’s a confident dude.”
Swilling’s recruiting effort reflects one of the two main reasons he committed to Tech back in August — first, to continue his father Pat Swilling’s legacy with the Yellow Jackets and second, to make Tech a championship caliber team again.
When Swilling heard the 3-star Alston committed, he was pleased.
“I was on him hard and then he decided to commit,” Swilling said of his influence on Alston.
Alston, a 6-foot-3, 250 pound defensive end from Atlanta, Ga., chose Tech over 20 other offers including Pennsylvania, Boston College, Harvard, Michigan State and Minnesota, according to 247 Sports.
While Swilling’s recruiting effort on the defensive side of the ball has paid off with Alston, the cornerback from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans, La. still has three weeks to influence any future commits to the Yellow Jackets’ 2017 signing class.
“(I’m talking to) a few other kids that are defensive linemen,” Swilling said. “I can’t release their names but I think we’re in a good spot with them (to commit).”
The Yellow Jackets currently have 15 verbal commits in the 2017 signing class.
