Tech, Mercer to play in 2016

Aug 12, 2013

Georgia Tech has contracted to play a 2016 non-conference game against Mercer, which is fielding a team this year for the first time since 1941.

The game is scheduled for Sept. 3, 2016 at Bobby Dodd Stadium. In a statement, athletic director Mike Bobinski said the game is an effort to play in-state teams. On top of the annual game against Georgia, Tech will play Georgia Southern in 2014. The only two other Division I schools with football teams are Georgia State, which is moving up to the Sun Belt Conference this year to play in FBS, and Savannah State at the FCS level. Kennesaw State will field its first team, to play at the FCS level, in 2015.

Mercer will play in the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League in 2013, but join the Southern Conference in 2014. Mercer was the Yellow Jackets’ first-ever opponent in 1892 – a 12-6 win for the Bears at Macon’s Central Park.
