Philips Arena will host the 2012 ACC men's basketball tournament, Commissioner John Swofford announced Sunday.

The ACC had previously announced that Atlanta would host the event, but had not specified the site. It was played in the Georgia Dome this year and in 2001.

"The feedback we are getting and our athletic directors made a decision on, was that having our tournament in a traditional-sized arena was the best thing for us, in terms of protecting the brand and the atmosphere and the environment that we want to have in terms of protecting what is quite frankly one of the most sought after and special tickets in all of sports," Swofford said.

The 2012 tournament will be the sixth held in Atlanta. The Omni hosted it in 1983, 1985 and 1989.

More than 158,000 fans attended this year's tournament at the Georgia Dome, the second-highest mark in NCAA history. The 2001 tournament drew 182,525 and ranks as the most-attended conference basketball tournament in NCAA history.

The tournament will be held in Greensboro in 2010 and 2011, and from 2013 through 2015.
