Campus is all but deserted this week as Georgia Tech is on spring break, but the men's golf team is sort of at “home” and apparently liking it.

The Yellow Jackets are playing in the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga., and Friday brought their best team round of the spring.

Coach Bruce Heppler is seeking more consistency than his team had in Hawaii, Puerto Rico or Las Vegas earlier this season, and Friday's round of 300, which left Tech 12-over par and in fourth place behind Furman (293), No. 1 Oklahoma State (293) and Alabama (294) was a step in that direction.

James White (73, 1 over par), Chesson Hadley (75), Kyle Scott (76), John-Tyler Griffin (76) and Paul Haley (77) are scoring for No. 17-ranked Tech, and Bo Andrews (77) and William Miller (79) are competing individually. White is tied for sixth, Hadley tied for 18th.

If not for the 15th hole, which Tech’s five scorers played in 7 over (three bogeys and a quadruple bogey), the Jackets would be in relative clover. Tech was 13 over for the final five holes.

Women’s tennis

Irina Falconi (25-2), ranked No. 1 nationally, keeps rolling. She was named ACC female tennis player of the week for the fourth time after straight-set wins last week over Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia and Catherine Newman of Vanderbilt as the Jackets beat both squads to jump from No. 39 to No. 13 in the national rankings. Tech lost 5-2 at Miami on Wednesday even though Falconi beat Laura Vallverdu 6-4, 6-4. ... Coach Bryan Shelton tinkered with his doubles lineup before the Miami match, and the Jackets (9-6, 0-2 ACC) lost the doubles point, so don't be surprised if during Saturday's noon match against Wake Forest (6-7, 0-1) he goes back to Sasha Krupina and Hillary Davis at No. 1, Falconi and Lynn Blau at No. 2 and Elizabeth Kilborn and Viet Ha Ngo at No. 3.

Baseball

The Jackets (18-2, 2-1 ACC) have a big series this weekend at North Carolina (16-6, 2-4), although the Tar Heels have started more slowly than some might have expected. Tech has scored double-digit runs in four consecutive games. ... Would-be closer Kevin Jacob is not expected to be available for the UNC series as he continues to rehab a shoulder injury suffered in training. ... Running back Roddy Jones is struggling at the plate in his return to baseball after an absence of more than two years. He's hitless in seven plate appearances with five strikeouts and a walk. He's scored one run.

Swimming

Gal Nevo is the only student-athlete representing Tech this weekend at the NCAA swimming-and-diving championships at Ohio State. He's seeded No. 9 in the 200 IM (Friday), No. 2 in the 400-yard individual medley (Saturday), and No. 13 in the 200 butterfly (Sunday). The NCAAs were delayed a day in Columbus, Ohio, because 18 athletes and one coach were affected by what health officials have determined was norovirus.

Track & field

There will be plenty of action Saturday at the George C. Griffin track as Tech plays host to the Yellow Jacket Invitational. The meet will include 10 men's and women's teams, including Georgia, as the Jackets compete outdoors for the second time this season. The men lost to UGA last week at home, where the women tied the Bulldogs 96-all. Competition begins Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (field) and 11:30 (track). ... Jhanelle McLeod went 40 feet, 6 inches in the triple jump against Georgia for a career-best mark. For the men, senior indoor All-America Steve Marcelle won the shot put and the discus.
