Georgia Tech likely redshirting freshmen who haven’t played yet

Sept 16, 2015

Barring injuries, Georgia Tech’s first-year freshmen who have played in the team’s first two games will likely be the only members of their class who see the field this season.

Tech has played eight of the 27-member signing class – linebackers Victor Alexander and Brant Mitchell, offensive tackle Will Bryan, safety A.J. Gray, B-back Marcus Marshall, A-back TaQuon Marshall, defensive end Anree Saint-Amour and wide receiver Brad Stewart.

Followng Wednesday’s practice, coach Paul Johnson said one or two other members of the class still have an outside chance to play. However, he said, “I think unless somebody gets hurt, we’ve played about all of them that are going to play.”

Last year, nine of the 21-player signing class played as first-year freshmen. Freshman B-back Quaide Weimerskirch, who enrolled early but missed all of the preseason with a foot injury suffered in the spring, has returned to practice but is working with the scout team, a strong indication that he’ll redshirt.

Johnson also said coaches will try to redshirt sophomore defensive end Tyler Merriweather, who played a handful of snaps last season as a first-year freshman.
