Georgia Tech center Freddie Burden a go, others undetermined
Georgia Tech center Freddie Burden, who left Saturday’s game against Notre Dame with an undisclosed injury and missed Monday’s practice, is expected to play against Duke on Saturday. That was among the better pieces of news for the Yellow Jackets as they try to recover from a clot of injuries suffered against the Fighting Irish.
“Freddie’s good to go,” coach Paul Johnson said after Tuesday’s practice.
Defensive linemen Rod Rook-Chungong and Patrick Gamble both did not practice Tuesday. A-back Broderick Snoddy’s availability is also uncertain. Johnson said that their status for the Duke game will be announced on Thursday with the release of the injury report. Wide receiver Micheal Summers (upper body) and A-back Qua Searcy (lower extremity) are already out.
Rook-Chungong and Gamble are both valuable members of the line. Rook-Chungong is part of a rotation at end with KeShun Freeman and Antonio Simmons. Gamble plays tackle in a group with Jabari Hunt and Adam Gotsis.
With the injuries at A-back, first-year freshman running back Quaide Weimerskirch was moved up this week from the scout team to practice with what the team calls the “varsity” – the starters and backups expected to play in games. Weimerskirch was a B-back in the spring after enrolling early but then suffered a foot injury in spring practice that required surgery. He did not return to practice until after the first game of the season. He was listed at A-back on the depth chart released Tuesday.
The chances that fellow first-year freshman running back Mikell Lands-Davis will remove his redshirt and play increase with the absence of Searcy and possibly Snoddy. In the preseason, Lands-Davis also began at B-back but was moved to A-back.
Lands-Davis playing “depends on if everybody’s back and where we are on Thursday,” Johnson said. “But we’re getting him ready, just like we do every week.”
