Georgia State’s men’s basketball team will travel to Clemson for the first round of the NIT. They will play at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The Panthers (25-8) qualified for the tournament because they were regular-season champs of the Sun Belt Conference. They were beaten by Louisiana-Lafayette in the finals of the Sun Belt tournament on Sunday in New Orleans.

The Tigers (20-12) finished sixth in the ACC. They are led by forward K.J. McDaniels, who averaged 17 points per game during the regular season. They were eliminated from the ACC tournament by Duke.

A stout defensive team, the Tigers are holding opponents to an average of 58 points per game this year. It’s the third-lowest mark among Division I teams. Georgia State is averaging 78 points.

If it wins, Georgia State, the sixth seed could face the winner of No. 2 Illinois vs. No. 7 Boston University in the second round.

The NIT is a 32-team tournament. The semifinals and finals are played at Madison Square Garden.

This will be Georgia State’s second appearance in the NIT.
