Georgia State QB also working at tight end
Though Emiere Scaife will play some quarterback at Georgia State, coach Trent Miles said he will also play tight end.
Scaife, a redshirt sophomore, entered spring and then fall camp in a three-way battle at quarterback with redshirt junior Conner Manning and redshirt freshman Aaron Winchester. None of the three have played a significant number of snaps in college.
However, Manning and Winchester soon began in camp to get more of the snaps with the first team.
Knowing Scaife’s athleticism and size (6-foot-4, 245 pounds), Miles and offensive coordiantor Luke Huard made the decision to move him to tight end during some portions of practice. He worked with both groups on Monday, and stayed after to catch passes from former starting quarterback Nick Arbuckle.
Scaife will also play in some packages on special teams.
The team has three tight ends: Keith Rucker, all-conference last season, Ari Werts and Bill Teknipp.
Scaife played quarterback and linebacker in high school in Charlotte. Miles said Scaife has never before played tight end.
Scaife’s ability to play either quarterback or tight end will give Miles and Huard flexibility in packages and play-calling.
“Emiere’s a guy that needs to play football,” Huard said. “He’s definitely still in the picture at quarterback because he does a lot of things well.”
