Georgia starter Michael Palazzone allowed one run in seven innings as the Bulldogs handed No. 5 Florida State its first loss of the season, winning 2-1 Saturday at Foley Field.

The Seminoles (9-1) loaded the bases in the eighth inning and had two on in the ninth but couldn’t score on Georgia’s relievers, who also pitched 4⅓ scoreless innings in a loss on Friday.

Parker Brunelle hit a solo home run in the second inning for Florida State. Brunelle and centerfielder Mike McGee had four of the Seminoles’ seven hits on the day. Palazzone (1-1) allowed five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in seven innings.

Georgia (3-7) tied it in the fifth when Levi Hyams hit an RBI-double to score Curt Powell. In the seventh, Peter Verdin hit a leadoff triple and scored on Johnathan Taylor’s sacrifice fly.

Left-hander Patrick Boling took over for Palazzone in the eighth inning. With two runners in scoring position, Boling struck out three of the next four batters — the other was an intentional walk — to escape the jam.

Tyler Maloof came on in the ninth and struck out the last two batters he faced to earn his third save and seal the win for the Bulldogs.

Today’s deciding game will match Georgia left-hander Craig Gullickson (0-1, 11.57 ERA) against Florida State right-hander Scott Sitz (2-0, 0.82).

Tennis

Georgia Tech’s women’s tennis team won three singles matches but lost 4-3 to No. 12 Miami at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Caroline Lilley, Elizabeth Kilborn and Lynn Blau earned singles victories for the No. 21 Yellow Jackets (6-5, 1-2), but the Hurricanes (9-2, 2-0) won the doubles point and the top two singles matches.

The Hurricanes took charge early, winning the doubles point then taking straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
